Welcome to Belvedere Island

Belvedere is a tiny island in Richardson Bay that is the location of some of the most exclusive homes in the Bay Area. Many of these residences were designed by famous architects or are historical landmarks. Because the terrain is hilly, most homes have a spectacular view of San Francisco, Angel Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, or Mt. Tamalpais.

Incorporated in 1896, the city was designed in the late 1800s by engineer M.M. O'Shaughnessy. The sunny slopes were terraced, lined by winding roads, stone walls, and country lanes, trees were planted, and Mission Revival mansions, Norman manor houses, Queen Anne gingerbread and Mediterranean villas were built for rich San Franciscans who wanted to live outside the city. The city was named Belvedere, which is Italian for "beautiful view."

Much of the antique architecture has been lovingly preserved in Belvedere; however, mixed in, you will find exquisite examples of dramatic modern styles created by the world's top architects.

Richardson Bay is an inlet of the San Francisco Bay and the island of Belvedere is connected to the Tiburon Peninsula by two causeways: San Rafael Avenue to the North and Beach Road on the South. Between the island and the peninsula lies beautiful Belvedere Lagoon. Gorgeous waterfront properties line the quiet streets that extend out into this private cove. Residents of this coveted location enjoy the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living.

Sailing is a way of life in Belvedere, and it is homeport to many world-class sailors. It is home to the San Francisco Yacht Club - the oldest yacht club on the Pacific Coast - founded in 1869 and considered to be the foremost yachting facility on the West Coast. Belvedere residents are encouraged to join the Belvedere Sailing Society - a sailing and social club that sponsors racing and social events year-round.

Belvedere is completely residential and subject to strict development criteria. For shopping, cafes, and grocery stores, Belvedere residents look to the Town of Tiburon, their next-door neighbor. This is not an inconvenience, because Tiburon shops are close enough to walk or bike to. The two towns share many public services, like police and fire departments. The Belvedere-Tiburon Library is brimming with community activities, like children's story hours, foreign language conversational groups, computer workshops and even live theater productions. The Reed Union School District, serving both communities, is one of the top-rated public school systems in the country.

While many community events are held in nearby Tiburon, Belvedere does host the Summer Concerts-In-The-Park in the Belvedere Community Park. The park also features a baseball field, batting cage, soccer field and basketball courts. A community center hosts programs for children such as tennis, Taekwondo, and the popular Sixth Grade Cotillion. The recently renovated playground, funded by a tax-exempt foundation created just to help support such community projects, has become the most popular playground in southern Marin.

Volunteerism is important to the citizens of Belvedere. Rather than hosting lavish fundraisers, residents prefer to be hands-on with their community involvement. You can find the people of Belvedere taking an active role in restoring historic structures, planting community gardens, helping at the library and serving on the PTA.
